David M. Gruen is a partner in the Pasadena office of Vanderford & Ruiz, LLP. He focuses his practice on professional liability, cyber liability, public entity defense, employment, and general liability.
Mr. Gruen has successfully represented some of California’s most respected law firms and real estate brokerages against alleged errors and omissions, as well as defended public entities, automotive dealerships, and small businesses against a variety of claims. He has obtained stellar results, including most recently the complete dismissal of a large California automotive group from allegations of fraud, the complete dismissal of a school district from a seven-figure negligence claim, the complete dismissal of a seven-figure malpractice claim against a law firm, and full recovery of a real estate brokerage’s entire monetary demand with attorney’s fees in a business dispute. Mr. Gruen also defends third-party cyber liability claims concerning alleged privacy and data intrusions.
Prior to practicing law, Mr. Gruen reported for a Washington, D.C.-based talk radio news service, covering stories from the Supreme Court of the United States, Capitol Hill, and the White House press pool. He also worked for the Los Angeles Free Clinic, assisting indigent pro per clients in navigating the legal system. Before joining Vanderford & Ruiz, LLP, Mr. Gruen practiced law at one of California’s largest fifty law firms, and a boutique professional liability firm.
Mr. Gruen received his J.D. from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where he was the Senior Research Editor of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review, and earned the First Honors Award in Legal Research and Writing (the highest grade in the class). He was also selected to participate in, and completed, the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) Los Angeles Trial School Program. Mr. Gruen has a B.A. in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he graduated with both college honors and departmental honors. He is duly licensed to practice law before all courts in the state of California, has appeared before the California Court of Appeal, and is admitted to practice before the Central and Southern United States District Courts of California.
In both 2017 and 2018, Mr. Gruen was named a Super Lawyers Rising Star, a distinction awarded to no more than 2.5% of attorneys in California.
When not advocating for his clients, Mr. Gruen enjoys traveling with his wife and son. He also conducts legal seminars, and has been a featured speaker at legal summits, including for the West San Gabriel Valley Association of REALTORS.
